I have watched this movie about 3 times and still cannot think of Richard Harris apart from Abraham.
Barbara Hershey (Sarah) did just as good a job as Mr. Harris. Their relationship and their roles in the stories found in the book of Genesis really come alive in the film.
Very seldom does a Bible movie bring out something "real" out of the original story, but this production accomplishes more than that, plus it builds wonderfully around the two main roles.
Gottfried John brings to life a somewhat obscure Bible character who became a loyal and devoted servant devoted servant after he was found by the clan shortly after they had left the land between the rivers.
From that point on, not only is he a free man, since Abraham purchased his freedom but he becomes his best friend.
He observes and advises the patriarch concerning the matters of the household, I thought this was brilliant on the part of the movie makers.
In one particular instance, after Isaac had been born and Ishmael had left the clan, Abraham finds himself a bit frustrated that all his time and energy somewhat might have been wasted on Ishmael since he is now gone and now he must turn to Isaac and teach him everything he needs to learn in a short amount of time.
He feels that his time to be gathered to his people is near.
They work hard together and Isaac is making great progress, but his father keeps pushing him hard to do more and more.
In one of those instances Eliezer notices something wrong with the whole situation gently confronts his master.
This is obviously not in the Bible but it is easy to assume that instances like this one occur between dear friends.
Iron sharpens iron!
I'd recommend this film to anyone, even if you've already seen it!
Watch it again, then come back and comment on it here...
It's cheap to buy movies from Ebay. This is how I buy most of my movies, and believe me, building this website requires me to have access to movies for cheap!;)
