African Movies

The last great corner of the globe attracting European attention for trade and exploration was Africa.

Since 1830 explorers had been braving disease, torrid heat, wild beasts and of course, savages. Throughout England and Europe Livingstone and Stanley are the best known.

Stanley had been commissioned to journey the heart of darkest Africa in search of the famous Gospel missionary, Dr. Livingstone, who had poured his life in service of the natives.

After his triumphant return to Marseille in 1878 it was natural for Europe to be interested in the continent and within only ten short years lands (almost all) had been partitioned between the British, French, Italian, and Portuguese but other Europeans were also interested.

And so African history begins to be shaped by the West, and the world has no unexplored continent.
