The Visual Bible:
The Gospel of John (2003)

The Bible

I am absolutely stunned at The Gospel of John, I can't think of a better Movie about the life and Ministry of Christ.

The Passion of the Christ will, of course, be the number one contender but you can't really compare the two. Especially when you consider that this movie is 3 hours long while The Passion is only 127 minutes.

Jesus' Portrayal

like it

Henry Ian Cusick portrays Jesus in a kind of "too modern way", which is reflected in the way he moves, expresses himself, the look in his face.

His countenance as a whole is a bit too modern.

BUT, you really can't help but like him. After a while, you will find yourself pleasantly acquainted with his personality and when the film is over will even sort of miss this Jesus.

The Bible portrays Jesus as gentle but as one whose teaching was delivered with authority. And yet he managed to be meek and humble.

That's the impression you get from Henry Ian Cusick.

I don't know why, but I've never seen a good portrayal of John the Baptist. What is it about him that no movie maker has been able to portray accurately? Or at least,
Is there a movie that does not portray him as a crazy prophet?

The Disciples

I wasn't too thrilled by Peter. I guess my problem here is that I absolutely love the Peter from the Passion. This Peter is different in so many ways.

He does not seem quite a strong leader either, but he does help elevate Jesus as the main focus of the film.

As for the other Disciples, you will hardly notice them with a few exceptions like Phillip and Thomas.

And of course Judas, but was he really a disciple?

There is an array of movies about Judas which portray him in so many different ways.

Some of them even make the point that he was just deceived but meant well. I don't buy into this theory at all for the simple fact that The Gospel of John says that the Devil or Satan entered him. And I don't think Satan means well at all..

The Jewish Leadership

The teachers of the Law are extremely well portrayed, they are zealous but at times when Jesus speaks directly to them they are tempted to "believe" but are unable because of their many laws.

From Caiaphas down to the guards, they constantly but accurately challenge Jesus until the time came when they crucified him.

The People

The Jewish people were easily swayed to whichever direction just as the Gospel describes.

First, The miracles, which by the way, were not corny at all. They were very believable and still leave room for you to draw your own conclusions.

As long as Jesus was performing miracles and feeding them they were for him. But as soon as he speaks "the truth" they are quick to pick up stones against him.

Second, you can see in many of them that eager countenance one receives after having "believed" that he was and is the Son of God!

Terrific job!

The Romans and Pilate

The Romans were not really around until the time of Jesus's arrest and throughout the crucifixion and burial.

The focus is Jesus and his ministry.

Film's Bottom Line

Here's what you can expect from this film.

It is a word-for-word meticulous portrayal and recreation of The Gospel of John which captures the essence of Jesus in a new and fascinating way.

I think you will agree with me once you watch it..
