Joseph of Nazareth is one skilled carpenter and proves it by producing beautiful work for king Herod and even earning the king's seal, a "key for protection", one that he'll need for safe travel.
He is a noble man and an honest worker, faithful to his God and caring for his people. A true good man.
When he meets Mary he is in awe of her beauty and wishes to be with her but disregards the whole idea because he is old and she is just a young girl.
It isn't until her dad begs him to marry her, right before his death, that he is to marry her.
Shortly after she is betrothed to him but soon he is taken away to do work for Herod but after his return finds her to have been unfaithful to him and seeks for ways to deal with this problem.

He intends to marry her, then shortly after divorce her in order to save her life. It isn't until the "voice" came to him that he believes her story.
We all know the story but the film takes a very human approach to the story, a charming one that does not quite follow the chronology found in the Bible but has most of the important events in it nonetheless.
Another interesting fact about the movie is the approach movie makers take to portray the angel that came to Mary in then Joseph was not a physical being but a voice they heard.
This is very different from most versions out there and possibly how most people hear from God today.
