June 28, 1914 sat World War 1 into motion.
While visiting Bosnia, Archduke Francis Ferdinand heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian.
Let's shed some light on the outbreak of the war rather than the causes.
Sometimes it's just easier to understand a historical event by looking how it happened rather than what caused it.
Archduke Francis Ferdinand
Austria and Serbia both were backed by two great empires. Germany was behind Austria and Russia backed Serbia.
Nearly a month after the assassination of the Austrian heir to the throne, July 23, Austria sent Serbia an ultimatum, since Austria believed that Serbia was behind the assassination.
Serbia had 48 hrs to put an end to all anti-Austrian propaganda. To put fire military or civil personnel hostile towards Austria. And for Austrian officials to sit in their courts in order to bring the guilty to justice.
All humiliating conditions, but the latter, were accepted.
Russia was not just going to be a bystander and watch Serbia be controlled and conquered by German backed Austria.
Germany's simple claim was that she would assist Austria only if attacked by Russia but when efforts by the Russians, French and English to allow Austria and Serbia to settle their affairs independently on their own she refused, knowing full well that it might lead to an armed conflict.
World War 1
Soon after on July 28 Austria declared war on Serbia, almost as soon as this happened Russia began mobilizing her military.
Germany claimed this was an attack on herself and did not wait long at all before she declared war on Russia on August 1 1914.
This same day Germany demands France (a Russian ally) states her position.
French officials sent back word that France would only take such actions as her interests best required.
Germany did not take too kind to this and declared war on France August 3, although her troops were already marching on France occupying neutral Luxembourg August 2.
Germany proceeded to give Belgium an ultimatum. She had from 7 pm to 7 am to decide wether she gave Germany free passage through her little kingdom to advance on France.
Belgium's reply was firm, they would stay neutral as granted by the powers, including Prussia, and would resist any violators.
World War 1 in Luxembourg
Great Britain taking notice of such threat on her little neighbor across the English Channel could not sit by.
British officials repeatedly made the greatest of efforts to convene all powers involved in order to bring a peaceful settlement on the issues (remember now) between Austria and Serbia but Germany was determined to block such an outcome.
The whole world by now could plainly see Germany's intentions when the German ambassador asked England would remain neutral on the matter on the promise that Germany not violate Belgian neutrality and further urged England to make the terms of her neutrality including a guarantee that France would also remain neutral.
Britain's response was to inform France of their full fleet support and protection were Germany to invade from the Channel or North Sea.
When 2 days later Britain learned of German troops making their way into Belgium, she demanded an assurance from the Germans that they respect Belgian neutrality. This neutrality "scrap of paper" was not enough reason for Britain to be concerned with, was Germany's response.
World War 1 in Belgium
Such contemptuous response about solemn treaties by which the European powers granted Belgium neutrality roused the anger of the entire globe and Great Britain had no choice but to declare war on Germany August 4, 1914.
Soon after Japan had also declared war on Germany and early November Turkey joined the central powers.
Within 3 months the conflict between Austria and Serbia involved Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey against Serbia, Russia, France, Belgium, England, Montenegro, and Japan.
